A new IPP Media website, www.kurayako.com, will start collecting opinion polls on the forthcoming elections from Tanzanians residing in and outside the country effective from next Monday.

According to a press statement issued by the IPP project co-ordinator of opinion polls, David Shillatu, kurayako.com is the official website for IPP Media special coverage of 2005 Tanzania General Election.

’’With effect from 26th September, the website will allow Tanzanians who reside in and outside the country to vote for presidential and parliamentary candidates,’’ says the statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Results for the opinion polls that will be conducted on the website are expected to be aired on Radio One and ITV, and will also be published in Nipashe and The Guardian newspapers every Friday, the statement reads in part.

’’This is the first time in the history of this country that presidential and parliamentary opinion polls are conducted online. It is a rare chance for Tanzanians living outside the country to cast their opinion votes,’’ says the statement.

For one to be an ’eligible’ voter, they will have to register themselves and a password will be issued, after which a clear go ahead will be given.

A voter will be restricted to cast a vote for one aspirant only for both presidential and parliamentarian aspirants.

The objective of this project is to allow the voice of the people to be heard , just like in other countries of the world. To an extent, the results of opinion polls were not very different from the actual results announced by the electoral authorities, the statement says.

’’The world is significantly going towards globalisation. We cannot go against the wind of change,’’ the statement says.

Kurayako.com was designed and developed by Infocom Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of IPP Group of Companies.

IPP Media special coverage of 2005 Tanzania General Election has included some of the main features like -News in Kiswahili (Main National language) as they are published and broadcasted by IPP media channels.

Other features include public comments on the news articles, feature articles (Kero za wananchi), bi-weekly opinion polls (run by ITV / Nipashe / Radio One) and the famous ’KURA YAKO’ simulated election process.
