CCM Union presidential candidate Jakaya Kikwete has promised to provide free education to HIV/Aids orphans.
Kikwete told a campaign rally at Mishenye in Bukoba yesterday that, if elected, all Aids orphans would receive free education.
He said the move would ensure the children had access to education like children with parents.
We will provide free education to Aids orphans to enable them to build strong foundation in life. They will miss their parents, not education, Kikwete said.
He said currently the government had a programme for distributing anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) countrywide.
He said that more than 40,000 benefit from the programme, although the target is to provide ARVs to over 500,000 people living with HIV/Aids.
He also promised that the next CCM government would rein in local government leaders who embezzle road funds.
He said idle property in the informal sector would be put to productive use to combat poverty.
Banks are not friends of the poor, therefore if the poor are left to stand on their own, they will remain downtrodden, Kikwete said.
He further said his government would make it a priority to improve education.
He also denounced politicians who advocate for regionalism, tribalism and racism.
