About 173 workers of Panasonic Battery Company (T) Limited in Dar es Salaam have laid down their tools, demanding improved pay packages and better working conditions.
Activities at the firm came to a standstill yesterday, as workers blocked the main entrance to the firms premises.
Speaking to The Guardian, the angry workers said the firm had not revised their salaries for more than ten years.
They went on strike since last Friday and insisted they would not back off until the management met their demands.
The workers said that the management had been suppressing their demands for too long but now they would not relent.
Our salaries have remained the same since 1995, despite our persistent reminder to the management, for a better pay, said Romwad Audat, representing his fellow workers.
Workers were also pressing for the management to fire three top management officials whom they claimed, were harassing them.
He was referring to the financial manager, Sales and Marketing manager as well as Human Resources Manager.
He claimed that the three were a stumbling block each time they wanted to present their demands.
The director does not know what is happening. Our complaints are not presented to him, said another worker, Sultan Mdosi.
Senior managers at the firm were not available for comment.
