Gangsters stormed a Dar es Salaam foreign exchange bureau yesterday and grabbed local and foreign currencies and travellers cheques valued at over 120m/-.
The robbers struck at Maxons Bureau de Change on Indira Gandhi Street and made off with 433,776/-, US$101,598 (110m/-) and traveller cheques worth 10,920,000/-, according to Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana.
The number of people involved in the robbery was not immediately clear.
Tibaigana said two people entered the shop at 8.15am and produced Tanzanian shillings which they wanted to exchange for a foreign currency.
After getting the money, the robbers suddenly lashed out at a security guard, Bakari Korongo, and snatched his gun before attacking a cashier, Radhal Hussein.
They then grabbed the money and travellers cheques before driving off in a car which was later found abandoned at Upanga.
Tibaigana said police suspected the car was stolen by the robbers earlier and were working to establish who the owner was.
He said police were also working on a very vital clue after picking up a passport dropped by one of the robbers as they fled from the scene.
Police sources said the passport was a foreign travel document, which suggested that those who carried out the robbery were not Tanzanians.
