Police in Dar es Salaam have identified one of the two suspected gangsters shot dead on Monday in Kawe as a serving soldier with Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF).

Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana gave the name of the deceased as Kasure Mashauri and his service number as MT7917.

Tibaigana said Mashauri was a member of TPDF Brigade No34.
He said that before he was shot dead, Mashauri was on duty and had been assigned the submachine gun he had used to open fire at the police.

He said the gun has a capacity of 30 rounds of ammunition but after the shootout, it remained with nine rounds of ammunition.

Tibaigana told reporters that the suspected gangsters were on a mission to commit a felony.

According to the police boss, the police, who were on routine patrol on Monday in Mwenge area in Dar es Salaam, saw a car speeding from Mikocheni. They gave chase and managed to block it at Kawe.

He said the vehicle had three passengers and one of them was in full military combat gear and armed with a submachine gun.

Tibaigana said when the police came out of their vehicle, the suspect opened fire at them.

The police responded with fire and shot him as his colleagues ran off. According to Tibaigana, the police chased them down and shot him dead and arrested the other.
