A police officer stands guard as prison warders appear before the Kisutu Resident’s Magistrate Court in Dar es Salaam yesterday to face charges of assault and inflicting grievous bodily harm.The accused denied the charges and were released on bail.
Nine Ukonga Prison warders were arraigned in the Kisutu Resident Magistrates Court yesterday to answer charges of assaulting and injuring two journalists.
The accused were Sergeant Charles Kija, Corporal Martine Mwakyoma, Corporal Juma Matembo, Corporal Scout Mwaipopo and Corporal Deogeatius Rondo.
The others were Tully Mwambwalulu, Mathew Phillip, Sebastian Mashauri and Damian Modestus.
The accused appeared before Principle Resident Magistrate Francis Mutungi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Patrick Byatao led the prosecution.
He told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 10, at around 10am in Ukonga Madafu residential area.
Byatao told the court that the accused assaulted Mpoki Bukuku, a photoghapher with Mwananchi Communications and Christopher Kidanka, a journalist with Legal and Human Rights Centre on the said date.
