By Peter Tindwa

The government of Japan yesterday extended grants totalling 420m/- to five development projects in Coast, Dar es Salaam, Manyara and Morogoro regions.

The Japanese Ambassador to Tanzania, Katsuya Ikeda, signed the five agreements on behalf of his government while the Dar es Salaam City Council Director, Wilson Mukama, signed on behalf the DCC.

Other four representatives who signed the agreements were Hanang District Executive Director Limbakisye Shimwela, a co-ordinator of Christian Rescue Services at Njia-Nne in Mkuranga, Pascalia Magwega, and the Executive Director of the Community Life Improvement Foundation in Mkuranga, Ellen Jonathan, and the chairperson of Kingolwira Village Council, Zuhura Farsy.

Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, Ambassador Ikeda said that the projects would be implemented under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots scheme.

He said Hanang, Morogoro rural and Mkuranga districts were among the districts facing a number of problems that impede smooth delivery of medical services.

’’Most of the villages for a very long time have been lacking health services mainly because of the absence of dispensaries.

People have been going long distances looking for medical services. Unfortunately the most affected population are women and children and in some cases pregnant women as well as patients in serious condition,’’ Ambassador Ikeda said.

He said his government was committed to complementing efforts of the Tanzania government towards the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which entail development of the social service sector as a means for poverty reduction.

Ambassador Ikeda stated that his government has provided the Dar es Salaam City Council with six trucks for collection of solid waste.

He noted that the city of Dar es Salaam has been producing 750 tons of general solid waste daily while collection capacity has remained 300 tons.
