A Deed of settlement between the government and ex- East African Community (ex-EAC) workers has finally been legally registered.
The registration of the deed allows the Finance Ministry to start paying terminal dues to the former EAC workers.
On Tuesday this week thousands of the ex-EAC employees, some from upcountry flocked to the Treasury demanding to be paid their dues as it was announced.
However, payments could not be effected because of the legal technicalities.
It was said that the deed of settlement was the main cause of the delay in effecting payment to the pensioners as it was still in the drafting process by lawyers from both sides.
Speaking to The Guardian via telephone, Joham Lukwaro, a lawyer who represented EAC workers, said the issue of deed of settlement has now been cleared in court.
My task is now over… they will be paid at any time from now but I cant say the exact timeframe, said Lukwaro.
He said that the Treasury was responsible to schedule the best way of paying the retirees.
According to Lukwaro, a deed of settlement was a very important document that outlines terms of payment agreed on by both sides.
After being drafted, the document was taken to court for registration to pave the way for the Finance Ministry to start paying the workers.
The Finance Minister, Basil Mramba, announced on Monday during President Benjamin Mkapas visit to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) headquarters that the government would start paying the ex-EAC workers on Tuesday.
