A Congolese national has lost US$450 (500,000/-) after taking a drink suspected to have been spiked with drugs.

Kungu Dilunga was offered the drink by a fellow passenger seated next to him on board a bus travelling to Dar es Salaam from Lumbumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana.

On reaching Kitonga in Iringa Region, the passenger gave Dilunga canned soda and he passed out almost immediately after taking the drink.

Tibaigana said the Congolese national regained consciousness at Dar es Salaam’s Amana Hospital where he was taken to by police after they were alerted by the bus’s crew.

’After the bus had arrived at the Ubungo terminal, the conductor and other crewmembers were surprised to see a man slumped in his seat after all the other passengers had alighted. It was then that they discovered that he had been drugged,’ he said.

Dilunga later told police that he had lost US$450 and his luggage and added that he suspected they had been taken by the person who offered him the drink on the bus.

He said, however, that he neither knew the name of the man nor where he lived.

Tibaigana cautioned passengers against accepting drinks and food from people they did not know.
