Three charged over Zanzibar crime wave

Three people appeared in court in Zanzibar yesterday, charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.

Salum Juma Said, 24, Suleiman Hamad Khamis, 31, and Jalala Maya Ndosela, 31, were brought before magistrates George Kazi and Khamis Kombakono of the Urban West Regional Court.

The prosecutor, Mohammed Khamis, told the court that the accused robbed Sahara Store of 12m/- and US$18,000 in Zanzibar Municipality on September 11, this year.

He said the three threatened Mohammed Rajab Mohammed with a firearm before taking the money.

The court also heard that the accused, armed with firearms and machetes, raided Nungwi Village Hotel where they robbed staff and guests of money, mobile phones and other valuables valued at 40.7m/- on September 6, this year.

Khamis further said that the three attempted to murder businessman Naushad Mohammed by opening fire on his vehicle on Kariakoo Street on September 11, this year.

The accused were allegedly riding in a car with the registration number ZNZ 37350 when they carried out the attack.

They denied the charges and were remanded in custody until October 3 when the case will come up for another mention.
