A South African is seeking to become the first person with HIV to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

Johannesburg resident, Paddy Nhlapo, who has lived with HIV for 14 years, was due to arrive in Tanzania on Wednesday evening ahead of the expedition, according to the South African Press Association.

Should he reach the summit, he will earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the first HIV-positive person to have reached the top of Africa’s highest mountain.

He will be accompanied by a friend, Richard Yell, who has been living with HIV for nine years.

’’Paddy intends to show that with healthy living, a positive HIV status does not limit a person’s aspirations or their ability to succeed in whatever their goals may be,’’ a statement from the organisers of the expedition said.

’’Paddy’s success would also reward him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.’’
