CCM’s Union presidential candidate, Jakaya Kikwete, has warned parties whose members go bare-chested, saying these are bent on violence.

’’There is a party, which you know of, which if they were holding a meeting here today, half of its members would be bare-chested”, Kikwete told a campaign rally at Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga on Wednesday.

Addressing thousands of people who attended the rally, Kikwete said CCM was a better party compared those in the opposition in to that it was built on good polices and had qualified leaders.

The candidate said some parties were fond of using abusive language and building up baseless resentments among the people, arguing that due to this non-progressive character, people see no reason why they should elect them to power.

He claimed that after various parties after discovered that the use of abusive language cannot help them, they have invented new tactics of carrying stones when they go to the campaign rallies, the acts he said were jeopardising peace and security.

Earlier, 2,884 members said to be from the opposition in Tanga district defected to CCM.

Kikwete received the ’’new’’ members at the rally which is part of his campaign trail scheduled to cover the region’s 11 constituencies.

The Tanga Urban District Secretary, Yoaza Mjema, handed the cards to Kikwete, who in turn gave them CCM cards as new members.

Among those who reportedly deserted their parties to join CCM was the UDP chairman for Tanga Region, Mwinyi Omari Said.

Kikwete said that the outgoing CCM government has made progress in the areas of education, health, agriculture and infrastructure building compared to the early years of independence.

He said if elected, he would put more emphasis on creating jobs for the youths by availing more loans to enable them establish development projects.
