The Chief of Defence Forces, General George Waitara, has held talks in Beijing with Chinese Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan.

Gen Waitara described China as a true friend of Tanzanians and thanked the country for the economic and military assistance it had extended to Tanzania since the 1960s, according to the Chinese news agency Xianhua.

He added that the people of China and Tanzania should strive to strengthen the cordial relations between the two countries for the sake of present and future generations.

Cao, who is also Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said China was ready to join hands with Tanzania with a view to bringing the friendly bilateral relations to a new high.

He said the close relations enjoyed by the two countries should serve as an example to other developing countries.

Gen Waitara held discussions with Liang Ganglie, Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, before meeting with Cao on Wednesday.
