Police in Kilimanjaro have beefed up security for the CCM Union presidential candidate, Jakaya Kikwete, after his arrival in the region.
The regions police chief, Mohamed Chicco, attributed the decision to orders from police headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
According to Chicco, it was not only Kikwete who would be accorded maximum security, but also other presidential candidates.
This is in response to reports of incidents of poll violence that have been witnessed in other regions, he said.
We cant take things for granted, we have proof of potential violence, he said.
Kikwete arrived in Kilimanajaro from Tanga on Thursday night to continue with his countrywide election campaign.
Tanzania goes to the polls at the end of this month.
The decision to beef up security was motivated by speculation that CCM faces stiff challenge from Chadema, NCCR-Mageuzi and TLP, which enjoy strong support in the region.
Besides regular police, Field Force Unit (FFU) and plainclothes police have been deployed to accompany Kikwetes entourage.
