Two people were killed and one was seriously injured in separate road accidents in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, police said yesterday.

The first accident involved a car which left the road and hit two pedestrians, killing one on the spot, on Saturday at Mbezi Louis, according to the regional police chief, Alfred Tibaigana.

He named the dead person as 45-year-old Mwajuma Kilama. Fatuma Saidi, 23, was seriously injured and taken to Muhimbili National Hospital.

The driver of the car abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

In another incident, Selemani Hassan, 29, was hit and killed by a car at Mtoni Mtongani.

The man was cycling on the busy Kilwa Road when the car hit him, Tibaigana said, adding that police were questioning the driver, Johnson Kasamke.

Meanwhile, property whose value was not immediately known was destroyed by fire in two separate incidents.

Tibaigana said a fire broke out at a garage at Buguruni Kisiwani on Saturday afternoon and reduced two cars to smoldering shells.

The second fire broke out at Kariakoo where a house was badly damaged in the midday blaze. There were no casualties in the two incidents.
