Fireworks will not be allowed during Hindu celebrations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, the police said yesterday in Dar es Salaam.

Hindu faithful, normally celebrate, the end of their religious year at the time, with fireworks to colour the event.

’’This time around we shall not allow display of fireworks on security grounds,’’ Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana said. He said the fireworks might scare people especially in Zanzibar.

Tibaigana said, though the Union elections were postponed, security, peace and tranquility must be strengthened.

’’Although the Hindus mark their celebrations on November 1 and 2, experience shows that during the two days in question the election activities would not be complete,’’ Tibaigana said.

The Hindus mark the celebrations every year and the event was associated with fireworks at their mosques and residences.

He said due to Zanzibar elections, it would not be wise for them to use fireworks.

’’Fireworks are likely to create fear and panic among the people who will not be aware about the celebrations,’’ he said.
The RPC asked the Hindus to bear with him.
