An additional 16.5 million gallons of fresh water are needed daily to meet the demand of the basic commodity for Dar es Salaam residents.

The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Lieutenant (rtd) Yusuf Makamba, said 90 million gallons of water are required daily for the city of Dar es Salaam, but currently only 73.5 million gallons are produced.

Makamba, however, said that the launch of DAWASCO under DAWASA was a strategy to improve water supply in the city.

The RC commended DAWASCO for having proven its competence in the construction and rehabilitation of water network and the supply of safe and pure water to Dar es Salaam.

Makamba also noted that there was a project to improve the service of water supply in both Dar es Salaam and Coastal regions.

He said that due to the Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Project (DWSSP), which is sponsored by the World Bank, EIB, and ADB, water scarcity problem would be history in the near future.

The Regional Commissioner made it clear that USD164 million was being used to implement the DWSSP projects to solve the prevailing problem of water scarcity in Dar es Salaam.

Meanwhile, Makamba said the number of shallow water wells dug in the region has increased from 55 in 1995 to 1,209 this year.

He also said that the number of deep-water wells has also increased from 86 in 1995 to 328 in 2005.

’’About 19 wells were drilled by the private firms and 126 deep-water wells were rehabilitated,’’ he said.

Makamba also said that in overcoming water crisis in the region, a project dubbed ’community water supply and sanitation’ is in the pipeline whereby water kiosks will be built in different parts of the region.

He added: ’’World Bank and DAWASA have contributed USD18 million for the project and water wells are being dug out of this financial support.’’
