The University of Dar es Salaam has decided to print its graduate certificates in the United Kingdom so as to avoid forgery.
Speaking to The Guardian by telephone yesterday, the Universitys Chief Academic Officer, Prof Mayunga Nkunya, said the decision was in response to forgery incidents of the UDSMs certificates in and outside the country.
We want to make sure that the certificates are error and forgery free, he said.
UDSM has received reports of forgery incidents from within and outside Tanzania whereby some strange people are purported to have graduated from the university while in the real fact it was untrue, he said.
He disclosed that this is the third year since they started printing the certificates in the UK where a British company, whose name he declined to reveal, has been contracted for the purpose.
However, Prof Nkunya admitted that the exercise has in turn resulted into some delays in granting the certificates to graduates.
Said he: Its true that delay has resulted during the process and some graduates have complained about it but we are still trying to perfect the system.
Some fresh graduates from UDSM, who visited The Guardian offices yesterday, and who had asked for anonymity, complained over the delay saying that it was a hindrance from getting jobs.
According to them, some employers in town could not offer them jobs because of the absence of original certificates and testimonials and as a result graduates from other universities take up the posts leaving them jobless.
They cited law graduates who are not allowed to petition for the Bar Exam before being enrolled as advocates unless and until they have original certificates.
