A cross section of Dar es Salaam residents were highly agitated by Civic United Front (CUF) supporters’ unplanned demonstration on Monday in Kariokoo area, Ilala District.

’’The riots were criminal acts that ought not to be entertained by any civilized mind,’’ said a shop owner who did not want his name to be published.

Many interviewed residents said the act threatened peace and caused disorder, instilled fear and panic.

’’Some of us had our property stolen in the resulting fracas,” said another resident.

The police used tear gas to disperse the rioters.
Resident said the rioters should be severely dealt with.
’’Riots are the antithesis of peace, law and order,’’ another resident said.

Good politics did not embrace riots as one of its salient features, an exclusive feature for the politics of doom, they said.

The government should carefully re-examine the behaviour and character of some political parties in the country, other said.

Where it was proved that such and such parties actively participate in violence, the government should even reconsider to de-register them for public interest, they said.

’’The need to protect public interest overrides the individual desire for disorder,’’ they said.
