TTCL starts retrenching its workers

By Peter Tindwa

The Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) yesterday started to retrench 400 out of its 1,242 employees.

TTCL Manager for Internal Affairs Gadi Mkemwa told The Guardian in Dar es Salaam yesterday that retrenchment of the 400 employees would involve workers who volunteered for the exercise.

Mkemwa stated that the exercise was going smoothly.

’At least over 200 workers out of the 400 have so far collected their cheques for their terminal benefits up to this moment,’ he said yesterday.

According to Mkemwa, some of volunteer workers were not allowed to be laid-off by the TTCL management as their services were still needed by the company.

He said the retrenchment exercise would involve both workers at the TTCL headquarters and those in up-country stations.

400 workers would be laid-off under the first phase, Mkemwa said, adding that the remaining 842 employees would be retrenched in the second phase, which would start any time from now.

Mkemwa, however, could not disclose the amount of money that would be spent by TTCL for the payment of terminal benefits to the 1,242 workers.

He said the TTCL management would issue a list of names of the remaining 842 of the would-be retrenchees in the near future.
