NCCR-Mageuzi Chairman James Mbatia said yesterday the Civic United Front (CUF)s refusal to recognise the Zanzibar elected government, amounts to intention to commit treason.
Addressing a press conference in Dar es Salaam, Mbatia said CUF members and supporters were wasting their time because the legally elected government had already been ushered in.
He said it would have made sense if CUF rejected the whole electoral process, rather than single out the results.
If you throw your hat in the ring, you have no other option but to accept the results, Mbatia said.
He said NCCR-Mageuzi had accepted the results but was concerned about police brutality on Pemba residents.
He said in Piki Village, his party noticed several cases of violation of human rights, warning that members of paramilitary forces employed by the Revolutionary Government (SMZ) had beaten innocent people and stole their property.
NCCR-Mageuzi carried out a survey in Pemba and established that violation of human rights during the electoral process was rampant, he said.
Mbatia claimed that SMZ was usurping the powers of President Benjamin Mkapa who is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
Earlier, Mbatia urged the formation of government of national unity in Zanzibar.
CCM should shun individual interests and forge a government of national unity, for the sake of a lasting peace on the Isles, he said.
He argued that a government of national unity should accommodate other political parties too, and not necessarily CCM and CUF alone.
