Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume has reappointed Iddi Pandu Hassan as the Attorney General of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.

The appointment came into effect yesterday, according to a Zanzibar State House statement.

President Karume also nominated five House of Representatives members.

They are Ramadhan Abdallah Juma, Asha Abdallah Juma, Brigadier-General Adam Mwakanjuki (retired), Ali Mzee Ali and Sultan Mohamed Mugheir.

The Zanzibar president is empowered by the Isles constitution to appoint ten House of Representatives members.

The appointments followed CCM’s victory in the October 30 elections which saw Karume win a second and final five-year term.

Also elected in the poll were House of Representatives members and councillors. The representatives are due to be sworn in today before President Karume addresses the House on Friday.

CCM and the Civic United Front (CUF) were the only parties to have won seats in the House of Representatives in the elections contested by several parties.

CCM won 30 of the 49 seats that were up for grabs with CUF taking the rest.

Irregularities in Dole constituency prompted the postponement of voting in the constituency to a later date.

Today’s swearing-in of representatives will be preceded by the election of the House speaker.

CCM’s Pandu Ameir Kificho, the immediate former speaker, was the only candidate for the position as of midday yesterday. Kificho has been speaker for two consecutive terms.

The swearing-in comes in the wake of a declaration by CUF that its representatives will not to cooperate with the newly elected government in protest at what the opposition party says were ’serious irregularities’ in last month’s elections.

However, the elections have been endorsed by a majority of international observers who were in the Isles in the run-up to and during voting last month.
