Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Yusuf Makamba has urged investors in the region to use a small portion of their profits to assist surrounding communities.
Makamba was speaking at Miburani Primary School when handing over a newly constructed well to be used by Umoja and Miburani primary schools and the surrounding communities.
He said even the holy books stated that those who had mercy and assisted the poor would be blessed for their hands work.
He thanked Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC) for financing the construction of the 28m/- well which is expected to benefit about 30,000 residents of Miburani Ward in Temeke Municipality.
Makamba urged other investors to emulate TCC in providing basic needs such as clean and safe water to the surrounding communities.
He said pupils would no longer have to carry water from home or beg for water from people living near the school after the completion of the project.
It is my hope that this project has provided a permanent solution to the problem of availability of clean water in this area, Makamba said.
Earlier, TCC General Manager Jorge da Motta said the company undertook the project under its corporate social responsibility programme.
He added that the project involved the drilling of a borehole, installation of a water pump and construction of two main outlets.
One of the outlets supplies water in the school compound while the other serves the surrounding community for a minimal fee.
As TCC, we believe that by putting something back into these communities, we are actually serving the communities from which we draw our employees as well as our customers, da Motta said.
Miburani Primary School was last year split into Miburani and Umoja primary schools.
The schools have a total of 2,611 pupils and 59 teachers.
