Villagers destroy school pit latrines

By Amri Lugungulo, PST, Kisarawe

Pit latrines at Janguo Secondary School in Kisarawe District have been destroyed in a land dispute.

Kisarawe District Executive Director Lewis Kalinjuna told PST yesterday that the toilets were destroyed by some Msanga Village residents who claimed that they had been erected on their plots.

He said the latrines were to be used by students living in a hostel whose construction was expected to begin in the near future.

’As soon as the project started, the villagers stormed the site and destroyed the latrines. I directed the headmaster to immediately suspend the project to avert a potentially bloody confrontation with the villagers,’ Kalinjuna said.

The building of the toilets was a pre-condition to the construction of the hostel.

Kalinjuna said the suspension of the project meant that funds set aside for the purchase of items such as beds and mattresses had been diverted to other schools in the district.

Kisarawe District has five public secondary schools, namely Chanzige, Maneromango, Chole, Mzenga and Janguo.

Most of the schools do not have dormitories and students rent rooms in surrounding villages.

The district also has one government secondary school, Minaki, and the privately owned Sanze Junior Seminary, both of which have dormitories.
