Hats off to Lowassa

President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete yesterday nominated Monduli Member of Parliament Edward Lowassa as the new Prime Minister.
Lowassa was overwhelmingly endorsed by 99.3 per cent of the secret ballots cast by MPs in the House and we can say his victory portrays the confidence the Parliament has in him.
To some observers, history has repeated itself because the name Edward featured prominently in the 1980’s when the late Edward Moringe Sokoine, the then MP for Monduli was Tanzania’s Prime Minister.
However, others say this was only a coincidence and there is no correlation whatsoever between the two names or the Monduli constituency for that matter.
We brush aside both suggestions nonetheless and congratulate Edward Lowassa on his appointment as Prime Minister.
Many MPs have congratulated him, saying they know him as a dedicated and hard worker.
There are those who had a chance to work with the new Premier, probably when he was minister for Livestock and Water Development. They describe him as a no-nonsense man.
However, we must admit that there is a section of Tanzanians which doesn’t know him well and is thus very curious.
The nomination is therefore opportune for Prime Minister Edward Lowassa to prove to them that what they have been told about him is true to the letter.
For ordinary mwananchi, the first thing that comes into mind whenever new leadership is in place, is whether the problems of inadequate health services, water, schools, roads and corruption in almost every sector of the economy would be addressed.
This is no easy task for the government and President Kikwete will indeed need people like Lowassa.
We would like to salute Edward Lowassa, Tanzania’s new Premier and wish him well in his arduous task of helping the President lead the country to the right direction.
