President Jakaya Kikwete is today expected to deliver his maiden speech in Parliament in Dodoma.

The president will speak at the end of the first session of the National Assembly since the December 14 general election.

The session saw the election of Samuel Sitta and Anna Makinda as Speaker and deputy Speaker, respectively, and endorsement of Edward Ngoyai Lowassa as prime minister.

Newly elected MPs were also sworn in as were women’s special seats legislators and nominated MPs.

President Kikwete arrived in Dodoma on Monday to a tumultuous welcome from the municipality’s residents.

He is on his first visit to the country’s capital since he was sworn in as president on December 21 in Dar es Salaam.

President Kikwete’s speech today will be his second address to the nation in his capacity as head of state. He delivered his first speech shortly after he was inaugurated.
