Tanzanian representatives in the African champions League, Young Africans football Association (Yanga) last week refused to play an international friendly match against Cecafa Club champions SC Villa of Uganda.

The Dar es Salaam-based team has also threatened to boycott another international friendly match against Zesco of Zambia.

The Zesco match is organised by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) while their match versus SC Villa was organised by CXC Holdings.

Yanga claim they refused to play SC Villa because the organiser of the match did not tell them how they would benefit from the match financially and that no agreement was signed between the two parties.

Yanga say they will not play against Zesco FC unless TFF assures them of their benefits - gate collection shares. The match is set for January 7 at the National Sports Stadium.

We strongly condemn Yanga players for taking these moves, they are supposed to concentrate on trial matches rather than money issues. They forget that they are not Tanzania’s representatives in the continental tourney.

Playing a number of friendly matches would enable them to perform well in their first leg African Champions League against Zanaco next month.

Playing against Zesco and SC Villa will strengthen the stamina of their players and help coach, Jack Chamangwana to identify his first squad.

Zesco will also represent Malawi in the Confederations Cup, and this will help Yanga build a stronger side.

SC Villa is among the strongest teams in East and Central Africa and Yanga could gain something by playing against it .
