Daladala driver among dead in Dar crash

Police have confirmed that the driver of the daladala which collided with a fuel tanker in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday was one of two people who died in the crash.
Initial reports said the daladala driver fled from the scene of the crash at the junction of Mandela Expressway and Changombe Road.
Police sources said on Thursday that that the driver of the minibus died in the accident which also killed a passenger in the vehicle. Their bodies were moved to the Muhimbili National Hospital mortuary to await identification by relatives.
Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana confirmed that police were holding the driver of the tanker involved in the accident.
Fourteen people were injured in the crash and seven had to undergo emergency operations at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI).
I can confirm that seven patients have been operated on after suffering serious injuries in the crash, MOI Public Relations Officer Almasi Jumaa said, adding that most of the casualties were brought in with multiple fractures.
Four people were treated and discharged while two were admitted overnight for observation, he said.
Tibaigana had earlier named the casualties as Masoud Said, 30, Myao Abasi, 36, Mhwale Hamis, 35, James Christopher, 24, Hamis Seleman, 22, Mohamed Ali, 32, and Athuman Sembali, 28.
Others are Jane John, 24, Siamini Juma, 21, Salma Francis, 7, Ramadhani Ali, 38, Christina John, 31, Ramadhani Ali, 33, William George, 19, Christopher Kato, 19, Mzee Mwinyijuma, 36, Mangalu Manzese, 36, and Upendo Haruko, 30.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker was coming from Dar es Salaam port and was on its way to Moshi with a cargo of diesel while the daladala was heading to Sinza from Tandika.
The two vehicles collided at a notorious accident black spot where traffic lights have not been functioning for over a year.
