Despite a court injunction barring him from contesting the post of Secretary General of the Tanzania Union of Industrial and Commercial Workers (TUICO), Boniface Nkakatisi went ahead and did just that, winning the post by a huge margin.

In the election conducted during TUICO’s third Annual General Meeting held here on Thursday, Nkakatisi who was seeking re-election to the post, polled 121 votes against his opponents, Sospeter Omolo and Stephen Yango who garnered 4 votes each while one vote was spoilt.

In an affidavit filed by three of the members, Mussa Nyongonyo, Joshua Nsubisi and Emmanuel Migire, it was claimed that Nkakatisi, who was born in 1942, is over sixty years of age and therefore disqualified to contest the post of Secretary General of TUICO.

’’After studying a joint affidavit to application by the three, I’m satisfied that there’s need for a grant of an interim order to prevent the violation of civil service laws,’’ an order of injunction signed by a Kisutu Resident Magistrate reads in part.

TUICO’s immediate chairman, Omar Ayoub Juma, also defended his post after polling 126 votes against Alfred Maswanya who polled one vote.

In his word of thanks, Nkakatisi called for rival parties within the trade union to resolve their differences and avoid unnecessary clashes that are being fuelled by some members for their own interests.

’’These results indicate how democracy is observed within TUICO, but the most important challenge lying ahead of us is to ensure that peace, unity and solidarity prevails for the union’s interest,’’ he said, adding that any action aimed at sabotaging the union’s stability would not be tolerated.

The Annual General Meeting also elected TUICO’s representative to the Trade Unions Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA), a member to the congress’ central committee, and representatives to the Congress’ general assembly as well as TUICO’s general assembly members.

Invited guests to the annual general meeting included TUCTA’s General Secretary, Nestory Ngulla, a representative from Kenya’s Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Anna Okelo and the Secretary General of the Researchers, Academicians and Allied Workers Union in Tanzania (RAAWU).
