Police in Dar es Salaam have hailed city residents for celebrating the New Year festival peacefully.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in his office the Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander (RPC), Alfred Tibaigana, said city residents have proved that they can conduct festivals without breaching the peace.

Tibaigana said a few days before New Year festival he had appealed to the people not to break the law and restricted them from doing acts that might disrupt peace.

’I am so happy that people received my message and understood it very well.

There were no serious crimes committed as many could have expected. Also people did not burn old tyres or even detonate fireworks except at two places,’ said Tibaigana.

He said save for Mbagala and Gongolamboto areas where people acted against the order of the police, the rest of Dar es Salaam was peaceful.

Meanwhile Tibaigana asked the city residents to cooperate with the police by informing them about any crime they witness or have knowledge about.

He said even if they do not have any evidence, the police would do their job to get the truth.

’Members of the public have been so helpful throughout the year, and I am asking them to keep on informing us whenever they suspect something, the police will do the rest,’ said Tibaigana.
