Dar City Council vehicle impounded over robbery

A motor vehicle belonging to Dar es Salaam City Council has been impounded by the police here and its driver arrested allegedly for involvement in committing robbery at Oryx Petrol Station at Picha ya Ndege area in Kibaha District last Friday at midnight.
The Regional Police Commander (RPC), Ali Mbilikira, said yesterday four people have been arrested so far in connection to the crime, where about five armed gangsters raided the petrol station.
The suspects are said to have made away with huge amount of money, the police said.
Mbilikira said police arrested Masoud Abdallah Shihenga (38), the driver of Land Rover, registration number STJ 2156 belonging to the Dar es Salaam City Council.
The vehicle was used in the robbery committed at the petrol station, he said.
The police arrested Shihenga, a resident of Kiwalani Minazi Mirefu in Dar es Salaam in the district as he tried to drive away to Dar es Salaam.
He said the vehicle, had a fake number plate STJ 8186, when the robbery was committed.
The suspected offender had in the car two gas cylinders, suspected to have been used by the bandits to destroy the safe of the petrol station, said the RPC.
He said two more residents of Maili Moja area in Kibaha township, Selesius Chendela(30), a mason and one Praygod Mfangavu(33), had been arrested too in connection with the crime.
We are looking for four other suspects, he said.
Meanwhile, suspected thugs fleeing by foot from police at Kibaha, Mwendapole area in Coast Region lost their cool and threw away in the bush a briefcase containing a machine gun and 73 rounds of ammoniums, so as to be able to run faster.
Night police patrols, chased them for about ten minutes, however, the thugs managed to disappear under the cover of darkness.
The police impounded the weapons, said Mbilikira confirming the incident yesterday and added that investigations were underway to determine the owner of the gun.
