Driver to be charged over baby’s death

Gharoub Saleh, the driver of the Urban West Regional Commissioner, is to appear in court after running over with a car and killing his own child, police said yesterday.

Saleh would be arraigned on a charge of causing death through negligence, according to Urban West Regional Police Commander George Kizuguto.

He denied claims that police were dragging their feet on the issue, saying they were waiting for Saleh to recover from a ’nasty’ shock before charging him.

’This matter has not been swept under the carpet as some people are claiming. The man is currently ill and will be charged once he is fit enough to stand trial.

’It’s not true that the matter had been put to rest because the person who died was his child,’ Kizuguto said, adding that Saleh was currently admitted to Mnazi Mmoja Hospital.

Saleh ran over his two-year-old son while driving the official vehicle of his boss, Abdallah Mwinyi, at Mwanakwerekwe last week.

The driver fainted upon learning that he had killed his child and was rushed to hospital where he was being treated for shock.

Eyewitnesses said Saleh had reversed the car without knowing that the child was playing behind the vehicle.
