A Festival to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of freedom fighter and former University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) lecturer Dr Walter Rodney is scheduled to take place in Dar es Salaam this month.

The festival has been jointly organised by the USDM Institute of Development Studies and several other institutions.

Prof Haroub Othman of UDSM said yesterday that that the event would be held on the second week of this month.

He recalled that Dr Rodney lectured at UDSM for eight years in the 1970s, during which he contributed a great deal to the independence struggle in Africa.

Dr Rodney, who authored the book How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, was shot dead in his home country of Guyana in 1979.

Dr Rodney’s wife and three children who were born in Tanzania are expected to attend the festival, which will also draw prominent academicians and individuals from across the continent.

The festival will be opened by Finance Minister Zakia Meghji and closed by Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
