The number of confirmed cholera cases in Dar es Salaam has reached 41, according to city authorities.

This followed the hospitalisation of four more patients, Gaston Makwembe, Public Relations Officer of the Dar es Salaam City Council (DCC), said yesterday, adding that the new cases were reported at Ilala, Vingunguti and Buguruni.

He said Buguruni was the worst hit area with 18 patients followed by Vingunguti, which had reported five cases so far while Tabata, Kigogo, Ilala and Kiwalani each had three patients.

Kitunda and Mchikichini have reported two cases each.

Makwembe said Mabibo, Kinyerezi and Ukonga each had reported one case since the disease resurfaced in the city last week.

The DCC official again lambasted people living in the worst hit areas for their reluctance to take preventive measures.

’We can’t go on like this…people living in these areas must start observing cleanliness and be constantly on guard against cholera otherwise the disease will never go away.

’The problem is that people boil drinking water and wash their hands only when there is an outbreak.

Once the disease goes away, they revert to their old ways,’ he said.
