The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training is still facing a deficit of 15,170 of primary school teachers from the targeted 45,000.
The Basic Education Statistics in Tanzania (BEST) report for June 2005 shows that a total of 29,830 teachers have been enrolled in five years, from 2000 to 2005.
That number of primary school teachers is not sufficient to go in line with the Primary Education Development Plan (PEDP) of 2000, which had targeted to get 45,000 trained teachers to fill the shortage gap of teachers in primary schools in the country.
BEST shows that 3,303 teachers were enrolled in 2000, in 2001 (8,906), in 2002 (11,211) whereas in 2,248 were enrolled in 2003.
The report also shows that in 2004 about 2,487 were enrolled and during last year (2005) about 1,675 were enrolled, making a total of all teachers enrolled by the Ministry of education since six year ago to 29,830.
In addition, the report also shows the total number of schools according to each region in Tanzania Mainland, whereby Lindi is at the bottom with only 27 secondary schools, both government and private.
Other regions with a small number of secondary schools are Singida (44), Tabora (46), Rukwa (46) and Manyara (46).
According to the report, Kilimanjaro Region tops the list with the largest number of secondary schools in the country — 200 secondary schools.
