By Charles Masayanyika, PST, Babati

Police in Babati in Manyara Region are holding a secondary school student for allegedly being in possession of 340 litres of an illicit brew, commonly known as gongo.

The Form Two student (name withheld) from Mkurungu Secondary in Dodoma, was apprehended at around 11am on Wednesday at his home in Magungu village, Kiteto District, Manyara Regional Police Commander Omari Samwix said.

The RPC said the suspect was arrested during a police crackdown on rising crime rate and drug abuse in the region.
The boy’s parents disappeared into a nearby bush during the raid.

Police, according to Samwix, found the student helping his parents to sell gongo.

During interrogation, the RPC said, the student said he had been assisting his parents to sell the brew to raise money for school fees.

The RPC said that, shortly after the police raided the house, his mother Hawa Andrew (48) disappeared from the house.

Samwix said police would hold the students until his parents surrendered themselves.

He said the student would not be arraigned in court because he is under age.
