2006-01-10 08:02:53
By Guardian Reporter
Life has become so tough for Dar es Salaam resident Eribariki Ayumwi Minja that he has decided to offer for sale one of his kidneys.
However, potential buyers will have to dig deep into their pockets because the asking price is US$10,000 (11m/-).
Minja, 26, said when he visited this newspapers offices yesterday that he had come to the conclusion that selling one of his kidneys was the only way he could raise enough money that would enable him to cope with lifes challenges.
Im currently bearing a burden that has become too heavy for me. Both of my parents are dead and I have to take care of my two siblings, but with neither a job nor some sort of business to keep us going, life has become impossibly difficult. Were going through hell on earth, he said.
Minja said he had been doing odd jobs since the wooden carvings business he jointly established with a friend collapsed three years ago.
I have been working here and there, but what I have been earning each day is not enough to provide us with a single square meal, let alone take care of other expenses such as rent and clothing. This is what has prompted me to offer a kidney for sale.
Minja said he had consulted medical experts who told him that a healthy person could live a normal life with one kidney.
He added that prospective buyers should not be put off by the US$10,000 price tag, saying, This price is negotiable.
I can negotiate with serious buyers and settle for a price that is mutually beneficial.
We can also discuss whether the money will be paid in lump sum or installments.
When asked who would pay for the operation to remove the organ, Minja said the cost would have to be borne by the buyer.
He said he would use the proceeds to establish a business, which he refused to specify.
Minja asked interested buyers to contact him through this newspaper.
