Young Africans (Yanga) opponents in the African Champions League Zanaco FC of Zambia intend to set up a camp in South Africa in readiness for the preliminary round, first leg match on February 17 at the National Stadium.

A source from Zambia told The Guardian yesterday that Zanaco chairman Edward Mutale confirmed that the Zambia champions had contacted some teams in the South African Premier Soccer League about the cost of using their camp houses for training when Zanaco set camp in that country.

’We have received some response on the quotations of using their facilities but everything will be known at the end of the week,’ Mutale said.

He added that the issue of friendly matches would only arise after the team manage to secure a camping venue.

’The South African teams are on recess and matters will only be discussed when their league comes back from recess.’

Meanwhile, Mutale said the team has failed to secure friendly matches from Angola but was positive of playing some teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

’We had wanted to be part of the Military tournament in Angola but Green Buffaloes have just told us it is not possible. I think communication difficulties with teams in Angola could also be a contributing factor,’ Mutale said.

He explained that besides getting friendly matches, a large number of players from the team were with the national team preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations slated for Egypt later this month.

’There are some players that we have targeted but are all currently with the national team. We are happy they are getting good training and exposure with the national team,’ Mutale added.

The players that Zanaco have targeted for recruitment for the 2006 season include Joseph Bwalya from Kabwe Warriors, Dube Phiri (Red Arrows), Lameck Njovu (Lusaka Dynamos) who are currently in camp with the national team while Ignatius Lwipa (Afrisports), Thomas Mulembema (Lusaka Dynamos) and Kameta Mutambo from Forest Rangers started training with Zanaco last Tuesday.

Other players from Zanaco with the national team are goalkeeper George Kolala, defender Kennedy Nketani and striker Mumamba Numba.
