Fire broke out at Tegeta Masaiti in Dar es Salaam yesterday razing down a house and destroying property worth about 20m/-.
Speaking to journalists in his office yesterday, the acting Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander, Abdallah Zombe said that the accident occurred at around 2.00am.
The Ag. RPC said that the owner of the house, Lenata Kayanda (55), who is a lecturer at University of Dar es Salaam was away on safari when the accident happened.
Zombe said initial investigation indicates that the fire was caused by an electric fault.
He said that no one was hurt and the city fire fighters extinguished the fire with co-operation from neighbours.
Meanwhile on Sunday at around 7am at the junction of Haile Sellasie and Ali Hassan Mwinyi Roads, an electricity fault is said to have caused an explosion in Room No 15 of Protea Hotel and and a blaze that ensued burnt everything inside.
Zombe said that the guest who rented the room was identified as Adams, a British national working with Prince Water-House Coopers. He was not in the room when the fire broke out so he could not rescue anything.
He said that the City fire fighters arrived at the scene before the fire could spread to other rooms, and added that no one was injured during the blaze.
In another incident, Zome said a corpse of a one-day baby girl was found stuffed in a box on Sunday morning at Kongowe Mzinga in Temeke Municipality, Dar es Salaam.
He said the police received information from a businessman, Abdallah Mohamed (47), a resident of Kongowe.
Mohamed told the police that he saw a suspicious looking box along the road, and when he looked inside it he found a baby girl.
Zombe said Mohamed informed the police immediately but when the police arrived they found out that the dumped baby was already dead .
Zombe said that the police are investigating to find out who is the mother of the abandoned dead child and that the body was taken to Muhimbili National Hospital morgue.
