The new Cabinet met yesterday in Dar es Salaam for the first time under the chairmanship of President Jakaya Kikwete.

President Kikwete used the meeting to brief the ministers and deputy ministers about their responsibilities and job description of each one of them.

The president named the Cabinet on January 4.

Speaking during the meeting that took place at State House, President Kikwete said: ’I have decided to call this meeting to brief you on your job description, the norms and ethics that go with your appointments.’

He told the ministers ’not to let wananchi down’ when implementing the manifesto of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

He said that they were expected to be creative in their discharge of duties.

He told them to take a leading role in initiating development programmes.

He said that every minister and deputy ministers should draw up development programmes and their implementation schedule.

In accomplishing their day-to-day duties, the President directed all ministers and deputy ministers to work closely with the media.

He asked for co-operation from each one of them in fighting corruption at different levels in the country and reminded them that the vice is a major problem in the government.

Regarding the CCM manifesto, Kikwete said that its implementation should start immediately.
