Energy Minister commends UNIDO

Tanzania has welcomed United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) initiative to champion for creation of an enabling environment for establishment of sustainable and affordable renewable energy projects.
According to the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Dr Ibrahim Msabaha, UNIDO led initiative in the provision of biomass-based modern energy will positively contribute to overall national development goals.
In his five- page speech in Dar es Salaam at the opening of a Biomass energy use workshop, Dr Msabaha said presently wood fuel accounted for about 90 per cent of the total energy consumption.
He said the UNIDO initiative would contribute much in promoting biomass technologies in the country resulting in the provision of affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly modern energy resources for our people.
Dr. Msabaha said Tanzania, which is one of pioneers of biogas technology in Africa, has presently more than 6,000 biogas plant units of various sizes for households and institutions.
He said already the Common Fund for Commodity and UNIDO has provided some US$100,000 to finance a feasibility study on the production of biogass from sisal waste.
