Deputy Minister for Water Shamsa Mwangunga said yesterday that people should adopt the habit of keeping water reserves as a way of coping with frequent water shortages.

Mwangunga gave the advice in Dar es Salaam on Saturday after she visited water supply facilities to determine the water situation.

The deputy minister visited Upper Ruvu and Kimara, where she inspected water tanks and also she visited Mabibo Hostel.

Mwangunga said that the water situation was serious, as the level of water at Upper Ruvu was low due to the prevailing drought.

’To have a permanent solution for water shortage problems, it is important that we adopt the tradition of keeping water reserves just as we do with food. Every stakeholder should play a part. People can do it by harvesting rain water,’ she said.

In addition, she said, the country’s water policy is good but it needs the support of all stakeholders in its implementation to be successful.

’The government has been playing its part by providing funds. Experts should give good advice especially on matters pertaining to the maintenance of machines. The citizens must guard both water sources and equipment.’

Regarding water rationing in Dar es Salaam, Mwangunga said it would go on because water levels are low and the equipment is old.
