13 parliamentary committees unveiled

The formation of 13 parliamentary standing committees was announced in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Samuel Sitta, Speaker of the National Assembly, told an MPs orientation seminar that the committees would meet in Dar es Salaam tomorrow and on Friday to elect their respective chairpersons and vice-chairpersons ahead of the parliamentary session beginning next week in Dodoma.
He said members of the committees were appointed on merit in accordance with parliamentary regulations.
The Finance and Economic Affairs Committee comprises 25 members, two of who are from the opposition, namely Ania Chaurembo of CUF and Chademas Zitto Kabwe.
The Constitutional, Legal and Public Administration Committee has 20 members, among them six opposition legislators, while the Public Accounts Committee is made up of 15 members, of whom three are from the opposition.
The Investments and Trade Committee is a 42-strong team with the opposition contributing just three members while the Foreign Affairs Committee comprises 23 members, of who all but four are from the ruling CCM.
The Defence and Security Committee has 15 members – 13 from CCM and two from the opposition – while the Natural Resources and Environmental team is made up of 25 members, two of who are from the opposition.
Twenty-two members make up the Social Welfare and Community Development Committee while the Local Authority Accounts team includes three members from the opposition.
Other committees are Agriculture and Land Development with 21 members and Infrastructure which has 25 members.
