The term of office of Tanzania Scouts Association (TSA) Chief Commissioner Gosbert Njunwa has expired.

TSA National Executive Committee Chairman, Col Fabian Massawe issued a statement on Tuesday, saying Njunwa would not seek another term.

’’Effective from today (Tuesday), the post of Chief Commissioner of Scouts is vacant. This is because Gosbert Njunwa, who was holding the position, has completed his term.

Although the association’s constitution allows him to stand for re-election, he has preferred not to do so since he wants to go for further studies,’’ the statement said.

It is not known whether Njunwa’s decision has been prompted by allegations of financial mismanagement levelled against the association.

However, when contacted for comment on this, Col Massawe maintained that Njunwa had completed his term and decided not to seek re-election.

’’I have stated it clearly in my statement that Njunwa has completed his tenure. We have already written to the Minister of Education and Vocational Training informing her of the development,’’ he said.

Last month, The Guardian unearthed a scandal in which top scouts officials were involved in the selling of invitations meant for scouts to people who were not members of TSA.

We also reported that IOGT-NTO Movement, a Swedish non-government Organisation, had withdrawn its sponsorship to TSA, citing mismanagement of the association’s finances.

The donors have reportedly stopped funding the second phase of the project worth about 83m/- because of lack of transparency and financial impropriety.

IOGT-NTO Movement official Per Eriksson urged the TSA top brass to conduct thorough investigations into allegations levelled against the body’s senior officials.

Eriksson said he was happy to see that Col Massawe and his committee had started taking action over the matter.
