A USA based non governmental organisation has pledged to build new classrooms for Kitonga Primary School in Mkuranga District, Coast Region.

The NGO, Books for Africa, says it will also provide reading materials to the school.

According to a pledge made by its Executive Director, Patrick Plonski, who visited the school at the weekend with a 12- man delegation from USA, the assistance will be channelled through Child Books Project, which is based in Dar es Salaam.

He said his organisation collects used books from individuals and institutions in USA and distributes them to Africa for free of charge.

Plonski said: ’After visiting the school we found out that there is a great need to support it. Children learn in very difficult situation. After going back to USA we shall look for funds to assist the school.’

He congratulated the students and teachers at the school for doing consistently well despite the harsh learning environment.

Kitonga Primary School is among beneficiaries of Children Books Project (CBP) which encourages use of libraries, distributes story books and teaching aids.

Plonski said the construction of the school will be co-ordinated by CBP.

Meanwhile, the founder of Books for Africa, Thomas Warth has donated to CBP 3,000 US dollars.

The funds would be used to assist in publishing of swahili books for children, Warth.
