The Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) has said the current rains in Dar es Salaam and along the Coastal regions do not mark the beginning of the long rainy season, but are a result of activities in the Indian Ocean.

Speaking to The Guardian in an exclusive interview, Dr Mohammed Mhita, the TMA Director General, said that the rainy season in Dar es Salaam and Coastal regions would start in March.

’’The rainfall that was experienced on Sunday, and yesterday morning resulted from ’convergence’ in the ocean and that it would last for only few days,’’ he clarified.

’’In regions like Kigoma, Mtwara, Mwanza, Songea and Mara the long rainy season started since December, last year, and the rains are still continuing normally, and farmers are cultivating crops,’’ he said, adding that there were a lot of rainfall in the eastern part of Lake Victoria.

Dr Mhita noted that Kigoma and Tabora regions were having enough rainfall and that some parts of Shinyanga and Singida were also receiving rains.
