Investors urged to expose graft

The government has appealed to the business community to expose corrupt people in the civil service to enable it deal with them.

President Jakaya Kikwete made the appeal on Tuesday night at a meeting with the business community in Dar es Salaam.
President Kikwete said the war against corruption could only be won if the business community were ready to co-operate in fighting the social vice.

’The business community has a major role to play in the fight against corruption. We can only win if both the business and government co-operate,’ he said.

’Let the government know who the perpetrators of this obnoxious and wicked practice are so that we deal with them. Let me know their networks so that we can dismantle them once and for all,’ the President added.

He told the gathering that his government is determined to address the concerns of the private sector as a way of spurring economic growth.

He listed concerns that the government would tackle. These included the strengthening of Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to make it more responsive to the business environment in the country.

He also cited reforms in the judiciary, the civil service, regional administration, public expenditure management and diligent implementation of National Prevention of Corruption Strategy across all sectors.

The other issues are such as the establishment of consultative processes in policy formulation and monitoring, supporting poverty alleviation strategies and increasing the impact of donor funding on the national economy.

The list also includes the development of a vibrant small- and medium-scale enterprises, the removal of impediments to market access, human resources development and access to utilities such as power, water and transport to attract more investments.

Other concerns listed by the President were cantered on institutional and administrative reforms to reduce the cost of doing business in the country and creating a more favourable socio-economic environment and security.

He reiterated his stand to make the government friendlier to the private sector to increase revenue collection and the pace of economic growth.

President Kikwete, however, challenged the private sector to assist the government in using the positive achievements in economic sector to fight extreme poverty at the grassroots level.

The chairman of Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), Elvis Musiba, said in his welcoming remarks that the business community was happy with President Kikwete’s bid to encourage the business community to play a proactive role in the economic development of the country.
