Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation (Dawasco) will scale down water supply at Lower Ruvu Treatment Plant by 50 per cent for two days starting today.

A statement issued by Dawasco public relations office yesterday said the cutback is meant to give way to the firm to install equipment at the treatment plant to improve water supply to the city.

Dawasco public relations manager Shy-Rose Bhanji said the move would result in an acute water shortage for two days from tomorrow 6pm to Monday 6pm in areas connected to the plant.

The areas are Bagamoyo, Boko, Tegeta, Kunduchi, Mbezi, Lugalo, Kawe, Malalakuwa, Mwenge, and Sinza. The others are Kijitonyama, Mwananyamala, Mikocheni, Kinondoni, Ilala, Kariakoo, Upanga and City Centre.

’’In the light of this development, we request our customers to preserve water for essential needs during the two days when production will be low,’’ said Bhanji. She also advised consumers to use water sparingly.
Last month, Dawasco warned its customers in the city to brace for an imminent acute water shortage.

’’Presently, the water plants at Ruvu Juu and Ruvu Chini are operating below capacity following reduced water regimes in the Ruvu and Kizinga Rivers,’’ the company said in the January statement.

It said further that the Ruvu Juu plant, which has a capacity to produce 81,000 cubic litres of water per day, produces 60,000 cubic litres, while Ruvu Chini with capacity for 182,000 litres per day was producing 120,000 litres.
