Two Kinondoni Post police officers who went carousing recently, leaving their station unmanned, were yesterday dismissed for desertion of duty.
Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commissioner Alfred Tibaigana told reporters that the two had been found guilty of absconding duty, following which they were handed a summary dismissal.
By virtual of the legal powers vested in me, I dismiss these officers for being irresponsible in executing their duties, Tibaigana told a Press conference yesterday.
He said investigations started immediately after the media reported that the police officers Corporal Deus (force number D19100) and PC Rajab (force number E9314) had deserted their station.
The matter grabbed news headlines after a Kinondoni resident went to seek police assistance at the station only to find it unattended.
After waiting for nearly four hours, he called the police on the emergency lines.
It is then that he was instructed by Central Police Station to collect the occurrence books and take them to Oysterbay Police Station, under which the Kinondoni Police Post falls.
Tibaigana said investigations had proved that the officers had deserted the station to go and entertain their girlfriends at a nearby pub.
We found that they had abandoned duty. In such a case, there is no defence other than sacking them summarily, the RPC said.
The dismissals come on the back of a public outcry over increased armed robberies in which members of the force have been accused of complicity.
He also said that investigations into a case in which a police officer he identified only as Yunus (force number F3353) is accused of colluding with a civilian, Yusuf Salum Mkere, to steal cell-phone and 60,000/- in cash from a Dar resident, are complete.
We are finalising the legal and administrative procedures before taking action. The officer will also be sacked after we are through with the paperwork, said RPC.
Meanwhile, Shura of Imams will today hold a demonstration to protest against the publication of Prophet Mohammad cartoons that were published in the Danish media in September last year and reproduced in European newspapers and the Internet from last month.
I have given a permit for demonstration after holding talks with their leaders and getting clarification about the involvement of Danish government in the matter, the RPC said.
I hope they understood me and they will not attack the Danish embassy, he added.
Tibaigana said the demonstration will be held after Friday prayers and will start at Mnazi Mmoja through Bibi Titi Mohamed road and Jangwani grounds.
Tibaigna also said he had issued a permit to Civic United Front (CUF) to hold a demonstration tomorrow to force Inspector General of Police Omar Mahita to resign for associating the party with criminals acts in the country.
