Young Africans (Yanga) today take on Zanaco FC of Zambia in the African Champions League, first leg match at the National Stadium.
Tanzanians and soccer lovers are expected to throng the Temeke-based stadium to cheer Yanga as well as watch the performance of their new players such as Benard Mwalala, Mwakenya, John Barasa, Gaudence Mwaikimba to mention but a few.
Everybody is waiting to see if Yanga will break the jinx of their archrivals Simba SC who were eliminated by the same team in the same tournament last year. Simba beat Zanaco 1-0 in the first leg match played at the Dar es Salaams National Stadium before the Zambians beat them 3-1 on the return leg in Lusaka.
We wish Yanga the best; they must win todays game and hold off Zanaco in the return leg match in Lusaka two weeks later.
With the number of international friendlies Yanga have so far played, we believe they are in better stead than the Zambian side who are reported to have played only two international friendlies against teams from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Yanga played Zambias representatives in the Confederation Cup Zesco FC, Ghanaian champions Asante Kotoko, Big Bullets of Malawi and Cecafa club defending champions SC Villa of Uganda.
A good performance by Yanga will bring forth peace among the Yanga executive, who have been at loggerheads ever since the team was eliminated in the preliminary stage of the same tournament in 2002.
We also hope for the best for local drivers who will compete in the TIOT Motor Rally Championship which flags off today at the New Africa Hotel and end tomorrow.
We expect local drivers to learn from the reigning African champion Muna Singh of Zambia about how he manages to succeed.
We hope Omar Bakhressa, Saleh Balhabou, Kinje Ngombale, Ahmed Huwel and Said Baghoza will make Tanzania proud of their performance.
It will be shameful for our drivers to put up a poor show considering the fact that the rally will be flagged-off by President Jakaya Kikwete.
The Presence of President Kikwete just shows how much interest the government has in what is otherwise considered minor sport.
Lastly, we wish all the visiting sportsmen a happy stay in Dar es Salaam.
